Be kind to yourself

"It's impossible to make your eyes twinkle if  you aren't feeling twinkly yourself."  (Roald Dahl)

We subscribe to the theory that each of us can ‘twinkle’ and make a difference in the world when we first look after ourselves. Spend time doing the things that fill you up, nurture self love, strengthen your resolve and calm your mind. Below are some things Kara does to be kind to herself.  We hope you find a little inspiration in the list.

  • Get in the kitchen and bake (obviously!!)
  • Swim in the ocean
  • Lie on green grass
  • Practise yoga
  • Turn off the phone
  • Take a walk outside
  • Spend time with a dog
  • Pour a glass of wine
  • Listen to music
  • Go for a run
  • Bask in the sun
  • Have a sleep in
  • Grab a paintbrush and paint
  • Do a spot of gardening
  • Read a book
  • Plan a holiday
  • Go on a picnic
  • Get out the sewing machine
  • Call a good friend
  • Make a nutritious meal
  • Pick some flowers
  • Be still

Be kind to others

"Be kind whenever possible.  It is always possible." (Dalai Lama)

We’re hell bent on sprinkling a whole lot of kindness on our customers and community.

As a customer of Jar and Tin, we want your cake to be beautiful and your experience with us to leave you smiley. Kara takes the time to chat, listen, understand, explore and create a cake that will add some soul to your celebration. You’ll be showered with kindness and professionalism.

As a member of the Byron Bay community, we want to help this little village of people thrive. We are always looking for ways to help. Currently, we are involved in the following programs:

  1. Volunteering our time and kitchen skills to Liberation Larder every month.  This local organisation does a super job of providing food and meals to people who are struggling to make ends meat. You can learn more about Liberation Larder by visiting their website here.
  2. Fulfilling local requests for a ‘cake drop’ once a month to a person or group who is in need of a little celebration but may not have the means to fund it. You can submit a request for consideration by clicking here. Please include the recipient’s name, recipient’s address, what they are celebrating, date they need to celebrate, your name and contact number. We prefer registered not-for-profits but will consider all requests.

Be kind to our planet

"The earth is what we all have in common." (Wendell Berry)

Buy Local

We're a little bit spoilt calling Byron Bay home.  It's not hard to commit to buying local and when you are surrounded by like-minded farmers and producers all striving to create a high quality, sustainable food system.  Not only are our key ingredients fresh and harvested in environmentally friendly ways, but they don't travel far to get to our kitchen.  Our eggs, fruit and flowers can be found just down the road, meaning their 'food miles' don't leave a big nasty carbon footprint on the earth.

Recycle & Reuse

Our little kitchen is a hive of recycling activity.  By their very nature, kitchens generate a lot of waste.  We take great pride in rinsing, collecting, sorting, stowing, reusing and recycling many of the packaging items that make their way into our kitchen.  There is a reason why we're called 'Jar and Tin'.  While some things must make their way into the recycling bin, we try to find practical uses for jars, tins, bottles, egg cartons, boxes and so on.  Everything from storage solutions to art projects to gardening resources.... we make recycling and repurposing a creative pursuit.

Choose renewable energy & resources

Some things are finite.  Some things are fragile.  We've got to treat them that way.  As citizens of the earth, we all have a responsibility to be walking a little lighter and putting back what we take out.  For this reason, our kitchen is powered by Enova Energy.  Established in 2016, Enova Energy made Australian history as the country’s first community-owned renewable energy retailer.  We like how they roll!  You too can sign up if you're interested - just click here.

Consume consciously

Consuming consciously requires us to embrace the first three principles AND think more purposefully about the small choices we make everyday.  It requires us to the ask ourselves the question, 'What impact does this have on the world around me?'.  It's bringing your own environmentally friendly bags to the markets.  It's drinking your coffee out of a keep cup.  It's riding your bike down the road rather than jumping in the car.  It's turning off the lights when you walk out of a room.  It's using up the week old vegetables in a good curry.  At Jar and Tin, we do all these things and more.

Let us know any other suggestions you may have.  We're in this together!
